What is a Book? What is the future of the book? This thesis investigates the nature of ‘visible language’ in relation to a book or printed matter. I argue that language is a placeholder upon which meaning is cast or ‘made visible,’ and that visibility is an effect of the interplay between imprint and reader. That the nature of ‘visible language’ seems irrevocably bound to its translatability, to its capacity to change meaning and shape. InThe Future of Hegel: Plasticity, Temporality and Dialectic, Catherine Malabou states, "Hegel is a thinker of the future and with a future: Hegel’s philosophy announces that the future, from now on, depends on the way the shapes and figures already present can be put back into play, on the way the extraordinary and unexpected can only arise out of the prose of the well-known and familiar."
Taking from the well-known and familiar forms of everyday objects, this project imagines how ‘visible language’ can be represented as an archaeological artifact from the future. To build on Ulises Carrión’s essay, “What a Book Is,” I ask, could a book—or reading itself— be a series of slices? The project uses slicing as a form of reading, as a series of shapes ‘made visible' by a machine, a mediatory device attempting to read or translatemeaning. If the book continues to transcend time, what will its future be?

"In any given context of interaction, there may be one or more aspects of identity that people may or may not want to express or reveal. Identities, as Goffman puts it, are like masks that can be worn and taken off in different contexts of social interaction. (Carmen Lee 2017).
What is the boundary between the real world and a fictional one? How does one express their sense of self? What if people could make a product of the different selves they want to project? FACADE is a company creating digital accessories as a new kind of ‘skin." As varied as each existing personality, FACADE allows people to create different ‘skins’ with varied add different textures, materials, and effects. A community is born via users who allow others to view them as multiple, communicating with each other via the app.

A study on contemporary privacy and camouflage, Idiot approaches the notion of concealment and protection through ubiquity. I blurred the boundaries of my own identity by creating a plurality of simulated and simultaneous presences, surrendering my privacy in order to reinstate it. "I'm losing my idiot state steadily, I'd much rather be an idiot," stated Marshall McLuhan. He refers to the original meaning of the word idiot which derives from the Greek idiotes, meaning a very private individual or citizen. The project embraces the word as an ironic reference to its original meaning.

NEON DAWN
2018
Thesis by Ziyi Xu
The thesis talks about the artificial and the afterlife through the lens of Chinese traditional funeral rituals. A Chinese traditional funeral is a spectacle. It’s complicated and ceremonious. It also becomes a standard whether you show your piety to dead. During the funeral, people will burn fake money, because people believe that the afterlife is similar to the world we are living in now. Through burning, you can send money and other material wealth to the deceased. The event is so elaborate, people will even invite professional criers to the funeral to facilitate proper mourning. Why is it necessary to hold on to material wealth for the afterlife? My thesis investigates this idea. I wanted to articulate this to a western audience by establishing an online retail store exaggerating these practices.
