Installation at Known Gallery, Los Angeles, California. Crimson is made with sweet potatoes, a material very basic to life and particular to indigenous cultures. High in energy it is capable of growth in restrained conditions. The potatoes are then coated with synthetic white paint, itself a form of restraint that renders a white-on-white landscape indicative of purity and uniformity. Yet what brings the work to life is the vulnerability it conceals. By placing several cutting tools in the space, the work invites participants to vandalize the object. With each cut the audience opens up questions of subjectivity and cultural colonization. Materials: Sweet potatoes, glue and white paint. Dimensions variable.
